NTC bars Diploma

Holders from
traditional subject-
based GTLE
by Justice Donkoh AA

! " #  %

In a signiAcant move by the National Teaching

Council (NTC), the era of traditional subject-
based Ghana Teacher Licensure Examinations
(GTLE) has come to an end, impacting a
staggering 11,480 diploma teacher trainees,
including both resitters and freshers.

The latest results reveal that out of this cohort, a

concerning 6,269 candidates did not make the
cut.

Diving into the numbers, a total of 6,756 were

resitters, while 4,724 were freshers. What’s
noteworthy is that these individuals won’t get
another shot at resitting the traditional subject
GTLE.

Instead, they are slated to transition to the newly

introduced subject-based GTLE, marking a
signiAcant shift in the examination landscape
for diploma holders.

The rationale behind this transition is clear: the

last round of the traditional subject GTLE has
concluded. Those who participated in this round
must now prepare for the subject-based GTLE.

This change is especially impactful as it

signiAes the end of an era for diploma holders
who are now required to upgrade to a Arst
degree to be eligible for the reformed GTLE
subject-based examination.

In a statement, Dennis Osei-Owusu, the Head of

Public Affairs of the NTC, shed light on the
evaluation process. Despite some candidates
passing one or two of the three subjects, they
were deemed to have failed.

The requirement was to secure a passing grade

in all three subjects to be considered successful.

Delving into the statistics, of the 6,756 resitters,

4,128 tackled one subject, 1,764 attempted two
subjects, and 864 faced the challenge of all
three subjects. Alarmingly, 3,675 of these
resitters failed, alongside 2,594 freshers who
also fell short of the mark
mark.

Looking ahead, the 2023 reformed GTLE, the

maiden edition of the subject-based
examination, witnessed the participation of
20,181 teacher trainees. However, over 30%,
precisely 9,556 candidates, did not meet the
pass mark, while 52.6%, or 10,625 trainees,
